First Hello from Chicago
Hello from Chicago International Airport Gates C-29, B-9, B-8, B-9 (again) where we are waiting for any flight back to Boston from our latest race trip to Wyoming and Montana (states 26 and 27). I'm taking advantage of our missed connection and delayed flights to begin this blog. I've got a couple of BIG races and BIG trips planned and I thought it might be nice to keep a log of my training and what I have coming up. I know we just met and you have no reason to trust me on this, but I got some great news (for a marathoner) during this past week that I will need to share at the end of the summer. I hope to pique your interest enough to keep you tuned in to find out more.
Anyway, brief introduction... I am Wendy and I have a shared goal with Mallory to run a half marathon or more in all the states. As mentioned, we just completed state 27. We aren't in any groups or 50-state clubs. We're just going for it, because we are a couple of women who believe in doing whatever we want and don't need no club to keep us keeping on. I also have the personal running goal to complete the Marathon Majors. I have qualified and run Boston twice at the opposite ends of hell: the heatwave of 2017 and the bitter-rain-freezing-wind-beatdown-death-storm of 2018. I earned a guaranteed entry for Chicago Marathon based on time and I'm beginning my Chicago training tomorrow, assuming I make it home. How ironic is it that I'm going to start my first week of marathon training extra exhausted due to being stuck in Chicago?
Well, the truth is this may NOT be my true first week of Chicago training. I have 17 weeks to go and Coach Bob is writing me a plan that I have not yet received, so I'm still winging it, so to speak. I'm not sure what the duration of this plan will be, but I have been really milking the recovery period by not running enough and eating complete trash. Seriously, my diet has consisted of wrapped items from the gas station. Seventeen weeks is more than enough time to train for a marathon since I have done 1-3 a year for the past 3 years, but I know I've got high mileage coming up soon. I need to get it started with or without a formal plan in hand. My mile base needs to be solid, my strength training a habit and my nutrition dialed in. It's go time!
I typed up a plan for next week while chillaxing in my tent in Yellowstone. It's as follows...
Monday (Soon to be today. Seriously United Airlines, get it together!) Run 6 easy and Standard Core
Tuesday Tempo Tuesday with Club, Core and Yoga for Feet
Wednesday Track and IT Band Routine
Thursday 4 Easy, Guantlet and Yoga for Hips
Friday 10 at 8:30 pace, Yoga Class
Saturday 4 Easy, Core and Yoga for Lower Body
Sunday Will Speck Memorial 5k and Full Body Strength
I tell you this, not because I have any reason to think you care. I actually don't believe anyone will read this. I tell you this, because planning makes success more likely. I've now written my weekly plan twice and made it public. For me, the toughest part of getting my fitness on between marathon training plans is the decision making. When I wonder what I'm going to do everyday, I often end up doing not much. So, there's your free lesson on success. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Now carry on.
What helps you reach goals? Please tell me in the comments.
